Please click on the link below to view a family resource page connected to our first math unit called Developing Computational Strategies for Whole Numbers. This resource will provide information about what your child will be learning, what does it mean and look like, and how to help your child at home. Unit 1 Family Resource Page
This unit is all about using the multiplication and division understandings from previous years. We will take the time to make sure students have a solid whole number place value understanding in order to move from this unit to the next. They need to be able to notate and explain the partial products and the regroupings, for multiplication (see the Family Resource Page for examples). Students will continue to understand how to think about large numbers as being multiplied “that many times” and when dividing large numbers, that quantity as being divided or put into “that many groups.”
Students need to have a multi digit multiplication strategy and use the standard algorithm for a multi digit x 1 digit in this unit.
Success criteria for students to consider this week to help them reflect on their performance of multiplying a multi-digit number by a whole number is:
I can use my knowledge of whole number place value to explain standard algorithm.
I can multiply using partial product notation.
I can multiply a multi-digit number by a 1 digit number using the standard algorithm.
I can estimate and assess the reasonableness of the product.
