The students have been working hard in third grade! Listed below are some details about what the students have been and will be learning about! Also, I included some additional notes at the end of this post!
Students have been reading chapter books during our reading block. We have been asking and answering questions about the text. Also, we have focused on analyzing characters to identify their actions, motivations, and traits. While reading, students have tried to use context clues in order to determine the meaning of unknown words. We will be transitioning into reading nonfiction text beginning next week. When reading nonfiction text, students will use text features to enhance their comprehension of a text. We will continue to ask and answer questions about the text. Furthermore, students will determine the meaning of unknown words.
As the students are reading nonfiction text, they will also be involved in writing an informational book about a topic of their choice. The students are busy researching their topic and gathering information. While writing, we will discuss how to organize our writing into different subtopics. Additionally, students will be responsible for including text features in their informational book.
During our mathematics block, the students have been deepening their understanding of multiplication and division. We have been focusing on quick recall of our x/÷ 2's and 5's facts. Also, we have been reviewing strategies and mathematical tools that can be used to solve addition and subtraction problems. A goal is for students to understand and be able to solve two-step word problems using all four mathematical operations. Additionally, students have worked on their understanding of fractions and determining the area of a figure.
We are getting close to the end of our Aquarium Habitats Science Unit. Some topics that we still need to discuss are:
- food chains and food webs
- predators vs. prey
- producers, consumers, and decomposers
- carnivores, herbivores, and omnivores
- water pollution
