Good evening,
We have been learning how to determine the area of a figure during math. Area is the measure (in square units) of the inside of a plane figure. The students received homework this week on finding the area of various shapes. One way students can find the area of a shape is by counting the number of square units. One observation you can make at home is whether or not your child is making use of the structure of the shape. For example, are the students simply counting each square to determine the area, or are they using skip counting patterns to help them? Also, it is important for students to realize that the square units are not always available for them to use while finding area. When I was determining the amount of paint I needed to paint the nursery this weekend, I did not have unit squares to help me find the area of the room. However, I was able to use the following equation to assist me: Area of a Rectangle = Length x Width. The following website may also be used by students to continue finding the area of a figure (Note: This website can be used when we learn about perimeter later on during the school year!)
