Week of October 13th

Hi,

I wanted to provide an update on what we have been learning about over the past few weeks! During our reading block, we have transitioned from nonfiction text to literary text. Students are asking and answering questions about the text. We have been focusing on using text evidence to support our answers! Also, we are identifying the traits, motivation, and action of a character.

During writing, we have been completing a true story. Students are focusing on adding dialogue to their stories. Also, the students are encouraged to add the thoughts and feelings of the characters. We have also discussed when to start a new paragraph (when there is a new subtopic, when time has moved forward, and when a new person is speaking).

While learning math, the students have transitioned to learning about multiplication. We are currently discussing strategies and tools that you can use to solve multiplication problems. For example, while solving 3x5, students may use repeated addition like 5+5+5 or make an array. Students can think about the problem as 3 groups of 5. Also, we are discussing various properties of multiplication. For instance, the commutative property of multiplication says that you can change the factors around in an equation and still get the same product. An example is 6x2 = 2x6 since the product (the answer to a multiplication problem) is 12.

We have also moved into our first science unit called Aquarium Habitats! During this unit, students will observe various plants and animals. Some of the animals include daphnia, newts, snails, and fiddler crabs. Students will also discuss how populations of organisms can change.

Notes
·       Thank you for so many parents requesting to be a volunteer for our school field trip. I am sorry that we could only select 3 chaperones! We will be having two more field trips later in the school year.

·       It is the time of the year when the weather is getting colder. Please consider sending your child to school with warm clothing so they are not cold during recess!

·       Please send in a note if your child misses school so it can be considered as an excused absence.

·        School Picture Day is this Wednesday, October 15th. Order forms for pictures were sent home at the end of last week.

·       Please remember that there is no school for students this Friday, October 17th.

·        Please review the two letters sent home today about the Fall Harvest Parties on Friday, October 24th. One of the letters relates to the third grade party during the school day while the other letter refers to the party that is held for the entire school from 6-8p.m.
